Is it like that?
They are deeply polite.
I guess it's like in German, where you have to speak formally if you don't know the other person.

German is very polite too but formality decreases as one becomes friends. In Japanese no matter how intimate you become, there are certain environments such as school or workplace where the dots must be put on the Is.
